Do Smiling And Frowning Causes Wrinkles?

Last week while trying to answer questions on Yahoo Answers, I came across series of questions relating to whether or not frowning and smiling causes wrinkles. I felt it would be proper to write on the above topic to help those who would be interested in the above topic to get answers.

Does frowning causes wrinkles?

The answer to the question above is ….. YES!!! I know many people when asked the same question would answer likewise. I guess this is so because much has been said about frowning.
Frowning is one of the major causes of facial wrinkles caused by facial expression. The area of the face prone to wrinkles when you frown is the area between the brow and this is known or referred to as frown lines.

Does smiling causes wrinkles?

If the above question was asked many years ago, many people would have said ‘no’. in the past people believed that frowning is the cause of wrinkles not smiling. And this is evident in movies, books which suggest this in some quarters, people where ask to smile more to get out wrinkles between the eyebrows. Even though this may be correct, they were not aware that smiling could cause some part of the face to wrinkle. The parts of the face prone to wrinkles when you smile are the corners of the eyes known as crow feet and the corners around the mouth.

Other factors responsible for those facial wrinkles

This section is important because I know some questions maybe propping up in your mind. Questions like “why do some people have more wrinkles than others?”.  The truth is that certain factors come into play to cause facial wrinkles. Below are some of them.
  •  Sun exposure: Exposure in the sun could cause damage to the skin.
  • Smoking of cigarettes: Smokes from cigarettes is known to cause the reduction in the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins are very important to keep the skin together.
  • Collagen and elastin:  These proteins like I stated earlier is needed to keep the skin together. These proteins are produced in high quantity when one is young. As one grows older, it tends to reduce. This is why it is difficult to see wrinkles on a young face.
  • Age: I would like to add age to this list because I feel it is very important. An older person is likely going to have wrinkles from smiling and frowning than a younger person.

Is there a solution?

In terms of prevention, there is little you can do about it, unless you want to stay as expressionlessly as possible. And you know this is almost impossible. To reduce facial wrinkles caused by these facial movements is to reduce the rate at which you smile, frown or make faces. Remember, I stated earlier that other factors also come into play. Reduce or stop those factors that are within your power.
In terms of treatment, there are several treatment available for both wrinkles caused by frowning and those caused by smiling for instance, there are patches available such as Furlesse and Frownies to remove or reduce facial wrinkles.
