Does Frowning Shorten Lifespan?

This post was necessitated by one of my readers who asked a question in the comment section of one of my post on Reasons to Smile More and Frown Less. I have since posted a reply and promise to post a short post on the topic so that other readers who may as well have this kind of question in mind may also benefit.

Does Frowning Shorten Lifespan?
Frowning does no directly cause or shorten lifespan.  But, some of the causes of frowning may lead to shorten lifespan. For instance, someone who smokes is likely going to frown which can cause frown lines to develop on the forehead as well as wrinkles on the skin. This is because smoke causes a drop in the production of collagen and elastin in the body. These two proteins are known to keep our body together. The same person that smokes is likely going to die young. So, cigarette can cause one to frown and can also shortens lifespan.
Another example is stress. Someone who is stressed is likely going to frown. If the stress is not properly managed, over a period, it can become a habit which can shorten a person’s lifespan.
There are few other examples I would have share with you but because I want to make it short, I decided to stop at two.
People do not frown just for the fun of it, if they do, its in few causes and for a short time. They frown because it is being triggered by something else. It is those things most times, if not tackle, that can shorten lifespan not necessary frowning.

  • Before fallen asleep while on the bed, lie facing the ceilings and close your eyes. Try to relax the face by putting it in a non-frowning position. You can smile a little if you find it difficult relaxing your forehead.
  • When the face is relax with your eyes still closed, think of nothing. Yes, nothing! Initially, it may be difficult to achieve but with time you get used to it.Instead of thinking of nothing, another way is to think of things, activities, places, people, etc that makes you happy which helps to make your face relaxed. Avoid all forms of thoughts that cause you to be sad or frown as they can compound your problems. You can see my post on how to meditate to stop frowning for additional information.

How To Stop Frowning In The Sun

It is a common practice to find people frowning in the sun. Many people who frown in the sun do so subconsciously. And this calls for concern especially when you get in the sun frequently. Your work and other activities that you involve in can get you in the sun often. And when you start frowning repeatedly in the sun overtime will results in the formation of frown lines and wrinkles in the skin especially in areas around the forehead. Here are what to do to stop frowning in the sun.
Frowning in the sun is largely as a result of the reflection of light from the sun. When the light from the sun is directly facing your eyes you are sure to frown. So, protect or shield your eyes from the sun’s light by wearing a wide brim hat, baseball cap or other head gear that will shield your face to a reasonable extent from the sun.
Sunglasses are also useful as it helps to reduce the reflection of the light from the sun. When this is done you are less likely to frown.
Ensure your eyes are healthy. Unhealthy eyes may cause you to frown. However, it depends on the kind of problems you have with your eyes. For example, if you find it difficult to see in very bright light you are likely going to strain your eyes when you experiences bright light.  So, always go for regular eye checkups and correct any defect.
Other tips to help you stop frowning include:
  • Being conscious of your face especially in areas around the forehead.
  • Be happy at all times.

How to Stop Frowning

Frowning had become part of so many people. The question is why do people frown? My investigation through interaction with people and from experience proved that people frown for some reasons.

People frown when they are stressed, worked-up, etc.; some when they keep malice; when they are disturbed; when they are angry, etc.

The funniest thing is that most people who frown don’t even know they do! When confronted with the question “do you frown?” their reply is most time like this “do I frown?”!

Baby Frowning
Some people who frown actually know they do, but they can’t actually help it. That is why I put it upon myself to investigate the causes of frowning and the ways one can actually stop it.

I went to a bank sometime to withdraw money. It was on weekend and since most bank open half day on Saturday and don’t open at all on Sundays, there was many customers in the bank that day trying to make one form of transaction to another. So, there was queue on the withdrawals section. I stood waiting for my turn patiently. From where I was standing, I saw the banker attending to customers in my section straining his eyes looking at the computer screen and in the process frowning!
So, when it got to my turn, I asked him when he has been on that sit attending to customers. He replied “8am”. I looked at my wrist watch; it was few minutes to 3pm.
The many customers behind me did not deter/stop me from asking one more question.
“For how long have you been working with this establishment?” he looked at me. A look that implied “why are you asking?” but he manages to say “for four years”
I did not ask any more question, but made conclusion based on what he had told me. Probably he goes to work every day except probably on Sundays!
Then it done on me; this man spend most part of his day frowning. Tell me, how do such person know when they frown? It is very difficult for such person to know! This is because they are now used to it.
So, there are so many of this banker all over the world who frown while working on a computer. Mind you, it is not only when working on a computer that you frown. You can be playing a computer game, watching television and yet frown.

I was at a bus stop one day waiting for a bus to convey me to my destination. In the process I sat on a chair on the bus stop waiting. A lady about 25 years of age sat beside me. Before long, her phone rang. She stood up and walks a few meters away from me answering the call.
While she was answering the call, I was watching her; although I could not hear what she was saying, I noticed that her looks change. She was frowning while taking back at the caller on the other end. Her facial expressions suggest that she was angry at the caller.
After ending the call she came back and sat where she was sitting before. But her facial expression still remained the same. I would have talk to her to ease her nerves. But I decide not to to see how long it will take to ease her mind and regain her face.
The bus came and we entered the bus.
Few minutes before she came down from the bus she received another phone call which made her more furious and which made her frowning her face the more.
While she came down from the bus, the looks on her face remained the same. The question now is I do not know how long it took for her face to soften probably 2 hours, 4 hours or maybe the whole day.
So, when we get angry, we frown and most times unconsciously.
Reduce the number of times you get angry, as it will help your frowning attitude.

Why did I give the above two scenario? I gave it just to prove that almost everybody on earth frown, and most times without knowing!

I was discussing with a boy who claimed he had never frown since he was born. And behold, in less than two minutes while I was with him, he frowned, when a friend of his told him he had misplaced his digital camera.

So, the issue is not whether or not you frown. It is the number of hours you spend frowning that matters
